painting of smeatons tower on plymouth hoe

"The Hoe Sunset" Fine Art Print

Regular price £30.00 Sale

The iconic Smeaton's Tower lighthouse proudly standing on Plymouth Hoe as the fiery skies signal the end to a perfect day.

Smeaton's Tower was brought ashore in 1884 and has stood on Plymouth Hoe ever since to protect sailors from the hazard of the Eddystone reef. Most of the reef is submerged and only three feet of rock is visible at high tide – even on calm days, water can be thrown into the air in spouts. Sea merchants were once so afraid of being wrecked on the reef that they sometimes sailed around the Channel Islands or the French Coast to try and avoid it.
